Twitter was buzzing all night over the wins and loss of the some of their favorite celebrities and movies. The 93rd Oscars went hostless again for the third consecutive year, but that didn’t stop shocking and history making moments. The ceremony on ABC certainly had social media celebrating, frustrated and showing love for movies all night.

Overall, there were 47% less Tweets mentioning the Oscars in 2021 compared to 2020: 2,000,462 Tweets mentioning the Oscars on April 25, 2021 though 9pm PST, down from 3,788,307 Tweets mentioning the Oscars on February 9, 2020 through 9pm PST.

Moment #1: Chadwick Boseman Not Winning Best Actor

The number of Tweets around the Oscars peaked the minute after the telecast ended, with the audience still trying to process the shock ending. Producers switched the order of the Oscars being presented, seemingly so the broadcast would end with the late Chadwick Boseman winning Best Actor, however Anthony Hopkins who was not in attendance won the award.

Moment #2: The Acceptance Speech Of Youn Yuh-jung

Youn Yuh-Jung was the first Korean actress to win Best Supporting Actress, but also a big topic of conversation was her comment that this was the first time she was meeting presenter Brad Pitt, who was also a producer on Minari. There were 22K Tweets mentioning both Youn Yuh-Jung and Brad Pitt through 9pm PST on Oscar Sunday.

Moment #3 Chloé Zhao Wins Best Director

Nomadland’s big win was likely undercut by Best Picture not being the last award of the night, as it traditionally is. Overall, through 9pm PST on Oscar Sunday there were 137K Tweets mentioning Nomadland.

Moment #5. Soul Wins Best Animated Film

While Best Animated film is not the most high profile category, Soul might have been the most broadly popular film on the night to win a major award.
