AEW Has Tons Of Momentum After All-Out And Heading Into Weekly Show, Per Social Media Data

This article is more than 4 years old.

AEW's All-Out pay-per-view just outside Chicago was another successful and entertaining event for the promotion. The upstart wrestling organization is threatening to snatch away a piece of the industry's pie from WWE.

With the promotion's new weekly show slated to air on Wednesdays on TNT in the fall, things are looking up. There were a number of positive signs from All-Out. If you were on social media just after the event on Saturday, and even early morning on Sunday, most of the feedback was positive.

The AEW brass is doing a good job developing stories, booking matches and of course, the in-ring performers are bringing it.

It's easy to catch a few positive tweets or Instagram messages and to place too much weight on what might be the vocal minority. That doesn't appear to be the case with AEW and All-Out. The social media statistics suggest the promotion and the show was a major topic of conversation over the holiday weekend. Per ListenFirst's Chief Marketing Officer Tracy David, AEW is succeeding and there is a good chance the interest will carry over into the launch of the weekly program. David says:

"With All Elite Wrestling debuting their weekly TNT show in a month, the social media response to their All Out pay per view event is a promising sign for the future of the company. The level of Twitter engagement around Chris Jericho, indicates AEW's first champion still has a WWE-sized fanbase, and the social media momentum from All Out is on track to carry over to the weekly program."

ListenFirst also provided some specific details about AEW's social media impact through the last week of August:

  • For All Elite Wrestling, their top video the week of August 25 -31, 2019 was Episode 9 of The Road to AEW's Double or Nothing (which occurred on May 25), with the clip generating 53.8K Interactions on YouTube. On Instagram, the standout content of the week for All Elite Wrestling was a Picture of Cody Rhodes pumping iron in preparation for AEW All Out, which received 39.9K Responses.
  • There was a Conversation Volume of 63,366 Tweets mentioning All Elite Wrestling on August 31, 2019, the day of the All Out PPV event. (Conversation Volume measures consumer mentions of a brand through explicit references to the brand's owned digital presences and official hashtags in user generated content on Twitter.) On the day, there were 15,515 Tweets mentioning the Twitter handle @IAmJericho of Chris Jericho, who was named AEW's first Champion at the event.
  • Chris Jericho, a former WWE star, still generates as much social media engagement as current WWE headliners. For instance between August 25-31, 2019 there were 21,394 Tweets mentioning the Twitter handle @WWERomanReigns around current WWE star Roman Reigns. In the same time period, the Twitter handle @IAmJericho was mentioned in 23,645 Tweets.
  • The AEW All Out Post Show generated 217K Interactions on YouTube on August 31, 2019 with the Instagram photo marking Chris Jericho's win receiving 91K Responses.

With AEW correctly positioning Jericho as a traffic driver and with matches still delivering, the debut of the weekly program figures to be one of the more watched wrestling programs during the month of October. I think it's official, there is a major new player in the professional wrestling world.
